Revolutionizing the Modern Workplace

Imagine a workplace where you could pick your own hours and come and go whenever you wanted. Heck, if you didn’t even want to go to work at all, you might even get away with that too. Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? The concept of “going bedouin” is fairly new, only having been around for the last few years- but it is quickly garnering more attention.

What is it?

Going bedouin is a concept that evolved out of the idea of having a results-only work environment (ROWE). ROWE seeks to demolish decades-old business dogma that equates physical presence with productivity. The goal is to judge performance not on an employee’s presence or hours that they put in, but rather, on their output. According to CTO and founder of Coghead, Greg Olsen, the goal of going bedouin is to create a low inertia business that takes less capital to get started and that can react with greater agility to changing conditions.

Cali Ressler and Jody Thompson are responsible for first employing the idea of ROWE. They started their company, CultureRx, based on the belief that there had to be a better way to work. According to them and their idea of ROWE,

A Results-Only Work Environment is one where your talent will show up energized, disciplined, fluid, flexible and focused-always ready to deliver the results necessary to drive your business. ROWE is a bold, cultural transformation that permeates the attitudes and operating style of an entire workplace, leveling the playing field and giving people autonomy-as long as the work gets done. In a ROWE, people do whatever they want whenever they want as long as the work gets done.

Sounds nice, doesn’t it? These women even came out with a book entitled: Why Work Sucks and How to Fix It, which was a New York Times Bestseller. It’s definitely innovative; and as many of us know, if employees actually look forward to going to work, the work produced is generally of a better quality. But are companies using it? It turns out that many technological companies have been going bedouin for several years and recently, Best Buy has jumped on board, allowing people the freedom to work wherever and whenever they want as long as the work gets done. Who knows, maybe more companies will adopt this idea; although it seems like they would have to put a great deal of trust in their employees to actually get the work done. What do you think?
