Video May Have Killed the Radio Star, but is Viacom Trying to Kill Video?
In a recent article that was published on Wired,
Google will have to turn over every record of every video watched by YouTube users, including users’ names and IP addresses, to Viacom, which is suing Google for allowing clips of its copyright videos to appear on YouTube, a judge ruled…
Most people use YouTube to watch and exchange videos with other people. If you ever want to watch old clips of musical performances or even find something humorous such as cats laughing or dogs walking on two feet, you usually go to YouTube. It seems quite harmless really. So, then what’s the big deal with now wanting everyone’s information?
It turns out, according to the article, that Viacom is seeking more than $1billion in damages against Google all because Google allowed people to upload clips of Viacom’s copyright material. Google argued back, however, that the law allows people to watch videos as long as they take down any copyrighted material. So, that’s why I couldn’t find that clip of Family Guy the other day…
It seems that Google will have a lot to answer for, but I’m not worried. After all, Google is like the King of the Internet. It just seems kinda’ silly that someone would want to stop people from sharing things..like videos. As for the rest of us who love social media sites like YouTube, the only advice I can think to give is to just be careful when uploading videos to the Internet. Know the sources as well as the copyright information. This isn’t that far off from downloading and sharing music files!
