Find That Nugget That Separates You From the Competition

*Note: This is a guest post written by one of our readers, Karl Staib. For more information on how to submit a guest post, please send an email to Janelle [at] unlimitedwebsolutions [dot] com or see our guidelines for guest posting.

Every blogger/writer/speaker wants an audience. We want to communicate our ideas to others. Everyone wants to be heard. It is the social beast within us that can’t be contained.

Maybe you want to communicate your ideas for: money, prestige, or maybe you’re so loaded with money, but you’re bored and you just want some attention.

It doesn’t matter why you do it, what matters is “what you do with the experience.” We are all in competition with co-workers, ourselves and time- whether you are the ice cream girl that wants a better schedule than the other ice cream employees or you are a manager who wants the “top performer” from another division on your team.

We All Want the Best Choices

That’s what blogging is all about, making your voice more compelling than the other 100 million blogs that are out there. It’s all about finding that nugget that brings you attention.

In the case of the ice cream girl, maybe she is so good with the customers that they give compliments to her manager or maybe you have the ear of the CEO who allows you to pluck that “top performer” for a raise into your team. They figured out how to find that little nugget that separates them from the competition.

I’m learning to separate myself from the crowd by researching topics before I write an article. If 1,000 other bloggers write “7 Tips to Becoming a Better Manager” then I’m going to get lost in the sea of noise. If I write a blog about “7 Secrets to Managing Up and Getting What You Want” then I’ve separated myself from most of the noise.

Take it to the Next Level

If your co-workers are all creating PowerPoint presentations to “wow” the boss, then create a video to go along with your presentation. Yes this takes more work, but it will make less work for you in the future. You will be able to use your past success to leverage your future success.

You need to separate yourself so you have more choices.

As more people read this article, more attention will be drawn to work-related issues and I will continue to build my expertise in the field of work happiness. The more you find my little nuggets, the more the “Work Happy Now” cause will spread.

You can separate yourself from the crowd by spreading little nuggets of goodness in every corner of your industry.

Always ask yourself: Can I find something new to make this better? By digging a little deeper you can stir those creative juices to help you get noticed. The added bonus from this extra creativity is more excitement. I know I always like a little more excitement in my working day.

Karl Staib writes about unlocking and kicking open the door to working happy at his own blog: Work Happy Now! If you enjoyed this article, you may like to subscribe to his feed, follow him on Twitter or read one of his most popular articles, Tell Your Boss You Need Leisure Time.
