Someone Explain Blog Carnivals!
Lots of bloggers have talked about blog carnivals and how effective they can be. In his post 101 Blog Tips I learned in 2006, Daniel of Daily Blog Tips talks about the importance of using blog carnivals. Readers like Egon of Automoblog and Ruud of Ruud PHP & My SQL agreed.
I’ve heard about blog carnivals for quite some time, but I’m not entirely sure about how they work, how to use them or what benefits they provide.

Hi Christine,
Blog carnivals are basically a scheduled event by the carnival “host” - usually weekly, monthly, or bi-weekly - where the host of the event (which is either one person/blog, or a different volunteer host each time) collects links to articles around their niche, submitted by the authors, and displays them in one post. You can submit your best posts to a carnival by going to blogcarnival.com and searching for a carnival in your niche.
Be warned though, there are a lot of carnivals in the list that are no longer active. You have to look to make sure there is another one scheduled, otherwise you’re wasting time.
Here’s an example of a carnival that I submit to occasionally: http://blogs.edmunds.com/.ee9e344
I’ve also been a host a few times. Bascially, at the start of submissions, we get an email for each submission from each blogger. We read those articles, decide if they should be included (there is a lot of spam) and then write a quick review of the article including the link.
Carnivals are great for everybody, because the host gets links and traffic from each blogger who participated, and the author gets a link to his article and/or homepage. It’s really a win/win situation.
I hope this helps clear up what carnivals are a bit. If you have any more questions, let me know.
Egon does a great job of explaining them.
I think blog carnivals are valuable to read - reading interesting posts and finding new blogs to follow. And blog carnivals can help you publicize your blog to new readers - them doing what you did in the last sentence (in my opinion the best ones to submit to are those you find worth reading). I run one myself focused on managing organizations more effectively.
