Networking Through Music? Blip.fm
Twitter really is the place to discover new things. While I was out doing my usual round of tweeting, I happened to notice that one of my followers posted a funny looking link that had a musical note attached to it. Of course, curiosity got the better of me and when I clicked on the URL, it brought me to a site called Blip.fm. After spending a short amount of time on the site, I realized that it was essentially akin to Twitter for music lovers.
I was in heaven.
Anyone who knows me, knows that I absolutely LOVE music; and here was this site devoted to exactly that cause. Created and launched by a company called Fuzz, Blip.fm has actually been around since mid 2007ish and was meant to be a microblogging service for music lovers. However, its creators hardly expected it to amount to much more than what it initially was: an experiment. It didn’t take long before Blip.fm took off, surpassing expectations from everyone.
Using Blip.fm
The awesome thing about this site is how easy it is to use as well as the integrated functionality it has on other sites such as Twitter, friendfeed and the like. Users sign up for a free Blip.fm account and immediately, they’ll see a search box on the main page asking then what song they want to Blip. Simply type in the name of a song or artist that you like and Blip.fm will generate a scrollable list of songs by that artist. You can then preview the entire song and/or click on “Blip” to blip it.
Underneath the search box, you’ll also see a live list of other users and the songs they have blipped. As your friends blip songs, you’ll see the list move down. You then have the option to:
- play their song to see if you like it
- re-blip their song if you like it and want your blip friends to see it
- add it to your playlist of songs
- bookmark and share the song on your other social networking sites
- give props to the DJ/person who blipped the song
Blips Away!
Each time you blip a song, other users have the opportunity to do the aforementioned things to you as well. It should be noted, also, that each time you give another DJ/user props (or a thumbs up on a song), that person is notified, and then they have the option of giving you a thumbs up on any songs you have blipped. The more props you get, the better you are ranked. After you acquire a certain number of props, you are stamped with a badge that lets others know how popular you are
Networking
Networking on Blip.fm is fun because you already have something in common with the other DJs you befriend, and that’s your taste in music! Blip.fm also allows you to add your website to your main page where other users will see it and will click on it (which is another great reason to build up those props and followers! There are a ton of other neat features as well. For example, I linked my Blip.fm profile up to my Twitter account so that I can let other Twitter users know what music I’m listening to. As for the other cool features, I won’t take any more time here to mention them; you’ll just have to get your own account and see for yourself!
